In accordance with a legislative mandate, the Texas Supreme Court recently promulgated a new rule that allows parties (or the trial judge, sua sponte) to request additional judicial resources for complex cases. Click here to read new Texas Rule of Judicial Administration 16.
The request for additional resources can include resources such as (1) assignment of a special judge, (2)additional court personnel, or (3) additional technology.
If the trial judge believes that additional resources are necessary, the request first goes to the presiding judge of the administrative region. The presiding judge can agree with the request and allocate appropriate resources that may be at the presiding judge's disposal. Or the presiding judge can refer the request to the Judicial Committee on Additional Resources. This committee is composed of the Chief Justice of the Texas Supreme Court and the presiding judges of the administrative regions.
